Looking for a formation that gives you plenty of options going forward? These FC 27 4-2-1-3 custom tactics from Rank 1 creator Dagnolf combine a striker, two inside forwards and a shadow striker to give you several ways to create chances.

After trying the setup, the attacking play is what stood out most. There are so many passing options around the ball, making it easy to link quick combinations together or find a through ball when a teammate breaks in behind.

Dagnolf describes the tactic as great for defending and counter-attacks. However, defending is still difficult in FC 27, and you should expect to concede. The biggest reason to try this setup is the freedom it gives you going forward.

Below, you’ll find the tactic code, team settings and every player role you need to copy it.

4-2-1-3 Custom Tactic Settings

Use the following team settings:

The formation gives you two defensive midfielders behind a CAM, with a left winger, right winger and striker completing the attack.

Balanced build-up gives you the flexibility to keep possession when there isn’t a clear opening. You can work the ball through midfield, bring your attackers into the move and wait for a better passing angle.

When you win possession and spot space, you can also move forward quickly. Look for your striker or an inside forward making a run, rather than taking extra touches and allowing the opposition to recover.

With a High defensive approach and a line height of 62, you still need to watch runs behind your back four. The defensive roles help give the setup structure, but they won’t remove the need to track runs and defend manually.

Goalkeeper: Goalkeeper — Defend

The goalkeeper uses Goalkeeper with the Defend focus.

This keeps the position straightforward, with the emphasis on their defensive duties. You don’t need to build your attacks around the keeper for this setup.

Left-Back and Right-Back: Fullback — Defend

Both fullbacks use Fullback with the Defend focus.

Keeping them conservative makes sense when you already have four attacking players ahead of your midfield. Your wingers provide wide options, so there is less need to push both fullbacks forward.

They also give you cover down the sides when you lose possession. Use them as a passing option if you need to recycle the ball, rather than feeling you have to force every attack forward.

Centre-Backs: Defender — Defend

Both centre-backs use Defender with the Defend focus.

Their main responsibility is to maintain the defensive shape and deal with opposition attacks.

Where possible, use a midfielder to close down the ball before stepping out with a centre-back. Pulling a defender forward too early can leave a gap for a striker to run into, particularly with the higher defensive line.

Left CDM: Box Crasher — Balanced

The left defensive midfielder uses Box Crasher with the Balanced focus.

This is the more adventurous player in your midfield pair, providing extra support going forward and another option around the penalty area.

An all-round midfielder is a sensible fit here. You want someone who can contribute with passing and attacking support while still being useful when you need to win the ball back.

Keep an eye on their position when an attack breaks down. If they have moved forward, you may need to cover the space they have left before pressing the ball.

Right CDM: Deep-Lying Playmaker — Build-Up

The right defensive midfielder uses Deep-Lying Playmaker with the Build-Up focus.

This player gives you an option when moving the ball out of defence. If a direct pass to an attacker isn’t available, find this midfielder and use them to connect the next stage of the move.

From there, you can look for your CAM, play out to a winger or keep possession until a run opens up.

Passing and composure are useful qualities for this position. Neither CDM is set to Holding with a Defend focus, so having two defensive midfielders doesn’t mean both will simply sit in front of the centre-backs throughout every attack.

CAM: Shadow Striker — Attack

The attacking midfielder uses Shadow Striker with the Attack focus.

This gives you another attacking threat close to your striker. Look for the CAM joining moves around the box and getting into positions where they can finish chances themselves.

Quick combinations work particularly well here. Play into your striker’s feet, look for the CAM nearby and use a lay-off or one-two to create an opening.

Choose someone who can finish as well as create. Dribbling and passing are valuable, but this position should also contribute goals.

Left Winger and Right Winger: Inside Forward — Balanced

Both wingers use Inside Forward with the Balanced focus.

They give you passing options on either side while also getting involved in more central attacking areas.

That is part of what makes this setup enjoyable going forward. You can combine through the middle, find a winger when the central route is blocked or look for a run towards goal.

Pace, dribbling and finishing are useful qualities for both positions. These players need to do more than deliver the ball to your striker; they are also part of your scoring threat.

Striker: Advanced Forward — Attack

The striker uses Advanced Forward with the Attack focus.

They provide your main target up front and an outlet when there is space behind the opposition defence.

Look for through balls when the run and passing angle are there. If the defender has covered the space, play into feet and combine with your CAM or an inside forward instead.

With several attackers involved, you don’t need to force your striker to create every chance alone.

How to Use This 4-2-1-3 Tactic in FC 27

Use Quick Passes and One-Twos

The biggest strength we noticed when using this tactic was the number of options available in attack.

Your CAM, striker and inside forwards give you plenty of players to combine with. Move the ball between them, use one-twos and look for the next pass as the defence reacts.

You don’t need to rush every move, but keeping the ball moving helps you make use of those nearby options.

Look for Through Balls

Through balls are another effective way to attack with this setup.

Watch for your striker or a wide attacker breaking into space, especially after you regain possession. An early pass can take advantage of an opposition defence that hasn’t recovered its shape.

If the run is covered, keep the ball. Use your Deep-Lying Playmaker or another nearby teammate and build a fresh opening.

Switch Your Route to Goal

Avoid sending every attack through the CAM.

If your opponent crowds the middle, move the ball to a winger. If they close down the wide option, look back inside for a combination with your striker or CAM.

Having several routes to goal is one of the main attractions of this formation. Make use of them instead of repeatedly forcing the same pass.

Expect to Concede

Defending is still tough in FC 27, so this tactic won’t guarantee clean sheets.

The fullbacks are set to Defend and you have two CDMs, but you still need to track runs, cover midfield gaps and avoid pulling your centre-backs out of position.

Our strongest impression was how dangerous the setup feels going forward. It gives you plenty of ways to create chances, even in matches where you concede at the other end.
